A collection of gourdsAlthough there are endless possiblities, I find that I create basically three things: bowls, birdhouses, and jack-o-lanterns.

I started with basic rim adorements on bowls that were leathered dyed. My first gourd class was coil weaving rims with pine needles.

My mother lives in Florida, and what a wonderful collection of natural dried things to coil on a gourd rim. I've collected philodendron sheaths, date palm fruit stalks, and palm inflorescence. I attended the Florida Gourd Society's festival and found a vendor, Primitive Originals that creates a wonder fiber from yucca leaves.

A group of gourdsIt was during the Florida Gourd Festival that I saw a demonstration on cutting slits for gourd weaving. Frances Amis was very generous with sharing information. So, now I weave the sides and coil the rims. This year, I have found classes for creating spokes and being able to do traditional basket weaving on a gourd. I can't wait to try that technique.

Below are links to images of some of my gourds, and thanks for looking.
